IB French B

IB offers courses in French that are designed for students who are already speakers of the language (French A) but also for those who are learners (Language Acquisition). French Language Acquisition consists of two challenging courses taught over two years: French ab initio and French B (Standard Level and Higher Level). The language proficiency levels offered by these options range from beginners (ab initio) to advanced (HL). Students practise the four fundamental skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) at every level of the French Language Acquisition courses. Additionally, by encouraging students to broaden their perspectives outside of the classroom, these courses promote respect for diversity, intercultural understanding, and appreciation of the French-speaking world.

French B Course Structure and Content

The Language Acquisition examinations in French B SL and French B HL consist of two papers and an internal assessment, all based on the five prescribed main themes (Identities, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organization, and Sharing the Planet). In Paper 1, students have to produce a written response based on a given prompt, using the appropriate text type while ensuring clarity and accuracy of the language. In Paper 2, students have to show their comprehension skills while listening to audio materials or reading authentic texts. The Internal Assessment is an interactive oral exam where students engage in a conversation based on the themes and literature (HL only). Throughout the course, French B students learn how to communicate in a variety of settings in both SL and HL, although HL demands a higher level of competency and the study of two literary works.

Tips

When studying French B SL or HL, you should immerse yourself in the language as much as possible. Reading articles will allow you to enrich your vocabulary but also to learn about the French-speaking world. Watching videos, listening to podcasts in French daily, exposing yourself to different accents from the French-speaking world, such as Canadian, Swiss, or Senegalese French will allow you to improve your comprehension skills and also familiarize yourself with different accents. Using RV Questionbank will allow you to practise and improve these skills in order to achieve the best possible grade. Practice makes perfect!
