IB English B
IB English Language B (Language Acquisition) is a set of demanding courses taught over two years. There are two different English B courses: English B Higher Level and Standard Level. These are different from English A courses (Language and Literature) as their focus is not language analysis and in-depth literary understanding. English B courses are also different from the ab initio course which is designed for students who have had little exposure to the language (less than 2 years).
Course Structure and Content
Language Acquisition - Language B - examinations consist of two papers. Paper 1 is a writing exercise, where students have to show conceptual understanding, appropriate use of language and vocabulary, and organizational skills. Paper 2 is a combination of reading and listening exercises, where students tackle different tasks to show their comprehension of the language. The Internal Assessment (Individual Oral) assesses oral skills and the ability to discuss the prescribed themes (Identities, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organization, Sharing the Planet) and subthemes of the course.
Tips
Both the English B HL and English B SL courses require students to study and practice on a regular basis. Read and familiarize yourself with the themes and subthemes. Keep a record of the themes you study and make connections between the themes as you improve your understanding. Practice writing and reading regularly, even if it is for fun! Schedule some practice time every week and go over RV questions in the Questionbank to improve your skills over time. You can write down new words when you hear them, and you should always try to immerse yourself in the culture and history of the language - the best exam results come from dedicated study and practice in conjunction with exposure to real-life culture and history.
